Clif Bar & Company

Clif Bar’s decision to build its flagship, state-of-the-art bakery in Idaho was driven in part by what the leadership team saw in the Twin Falls area – a place that would help elevate the company’s guiding values or aspirations, which are sustaining its business, brands, people, community, and the planet. Likewise, Clif Bar chose its design and construction teams based on their fit with these values. DC Engineering worked closely with teams of Clif Bar personnel, architect Babcock Design, and others to bring to life a healthy, welcoming place for people to work, that reflect the company's aspirations of sustainability.

The 300,000 SF bakery has earned many awards, including the prestigious ‘Food Engineering’s Sustainable Plant of the Year Award’ in 2017, and is pursuing LEED Certification from the US Green Building Council (USGBC).

Clif Bar Design Highlights:

  • Lead engineering design firm on the project (Mechanical, Electrical, Structural, Controls, Commissioning, Applied IT)
  • The 300,000 SF bakery includes hybrid cooling towers, enabling the plant to use 30% less water than a conventional system.
  • On-demand conveyors, heat reclaim from process equipment, and LED lighting are key factors to a significant energy savings.
  • And efficient refrigeration system design that provides for a 40% reduction in GWP.
  • 100% of the electricity required to power the bakery is generated from green renewable energy through purchase of Renewable Energy Credits (RECs).
  • Pretreatment Facility design (electrical, mechanical, controls) to meet discharge limits.
  • Design today with opportunities for tomorrow:
    • Provisions for one of the largest ground source heat pumps in Pacific Northwest
    • Study and design provision for future building/bakery expansion
    • Study and design provision for on-site sustainable energy production
